"Rifaa's children" is Guy Sorman's latest book and he's interviewed by Marianne, a french magazine.
M: In your last book you predict Israel's disappearance. As if you had integrated the most hostile adversaries of the Jewish state. We can find those words quite disturbing.
G S: Being myself a jew, I'm only getting involved in the jewish tradition of the prophets of doom.
My thesis has largely been influenced by talks with a great number of muslims. However, I've never met a Muslim, even enlightened, who accepts Israel's existence.. Its refusal is total, all over the Arab world. Diplomats are not aware of this. And it's not to Israel that rests the responsibility of the peace refusal.
M: But that Arab refusal can be solved through negociations?
G S: No, it's an existential refusal. It's the idea that Israel will pass as has passed the Franc kingdom or as the seasons pass. To shush the deepness of this certainty within the Arabs is counterproductive. It hides us from reality. It's what allows you to get refuge in illusion.
M: But the Arab world can make its revolution and change its discourse? You deal in your book with those men and women expecting democracy.
GS: But the western world doesn't help them. To change the intellectual and politcal landscape in Islam's soil is a very very long task. Besides, the reason why I'm pessimistic about the future of jews, is because the Diaspora is also threatened. Threatened to extinction by demography laws. Many NYC intellectual jews write about this inevitable dilution of the identity in mixed marriages.
(I heard an interview of him last saturday and another aspect is that Israel is a very small country surrounded by Muslim countries with hundreds of millions of inhabitants. This is not sustainable for ever).
