They're such nice, well intentioned folks...
...it's hard to reveal to them their political values are completely messed up.

I let them think of me as a kindly well-read liberal too. Only the visible shock and shudder when I get a book about Goldwater or Nixon ,which is amusing to watch them visibly supress, reveals their political persuasion - and mine. Sometimes -to comfort them* - I tell them its research for a political paper, and they seem greatly relieved.
