I never really thought of how being a geek came into vogue until reading this. This does explain something that I never could figure out. In 1994 my girlfriend convinced me to quit wearing contacts and go back to glasses. I was stunned by the request, since I hadn't been called 4-eyes in about 5 years due to contacts. Somehow she convinced me (girls have a way of doing that to geeks) and I went back to them. My glasses have become much cooler since then, but I still wear them. I once mentioned to my wife (different person than the aforementioned girlfriend) that I was considering going back to contacts, instead she picked out some new glasses for me. Also the fact technology has made glasses much thinner and I have an eye doctor who knows a few tricks to hide the thickness really helped.
