Yep, that's an ugly font. It's not really a font, in fact, in the modern sense like Arial and Times; it's a legacy of the very oldest Windows, circa 1985. That means, by the way, that anybody viewing your post on a non-Windows computer will have no idea what the bitching is about.
You can count on these fonts always being available on all browsers: Times in the serif family; Helvetica in the san-serif family.
Browsers under Windows (95% of all browsers) also always have: Times New Roman (a version of Times tweaked for computer displays); Arial and Verdana.
I like to use Garamond, which isn't installed automatically with browsers, but is installed on a lot of computers as a side-effect of installing other software, like Microsoft Office.
Finally, you can specify multiple fonts, to give yourself a fallback position. If you'd like Garamond, but can't count on it being installed, you can make Times the backup using <font face="Garamond,Times new Roman,Times, serif">. Note the "serif" at the end--that makes sure you get some kind of serif font, even if the surrounding font is sans-serif and none of your other choices is available.
