Re: smoking bans

The same anti-smoking people are trying to make it illegal to smoke in your own home, believe it or not. This has already been attempted in a few places.

When Rush Limbaugh told us a few years back that the Left was going to go after SUVs, everyone thought he was nuts.

Right now, the "slippery slope" is socialized medicine, and we're already halfway down it.

Medicare was the first shot fired in the socialized medicine wars, and the next barrage is showing up now in the Democratic trial balloons. Encouraged to go beyond the prescription drug incremental proposal, many are shooting for full-up single payer systems.

In 1964, a long-range estimate by Medicare proponents projected the total expense by 1990 at $10 billion. In reality, it was $110 billion. Current Medicare spending (not counting Medicaid) for 2004 is about $255 billion.

Every single major social spending program ever enacted has grown not just along with inflation or the growth of the country, but far beyond. There is absolutely no reason to think that expanded government medical programs wouldn't do the same thing.
