I heard this story on the radio the other day...
A certain lady who hosted many social events, was proud of her ability, using a memory technique, to remember the names of her guests even if only introduced to them once as they arrived.
At the end of another successful event, she was bidding her guests farewell, when one gentleman approached and she found herself momentarily unable to recall his name. She recovered before he reached her, and with a warm smile she said, "Thank you so much for coming, Dick! Goodnight."
Alas, the fellow's name was Peter.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Which got me to thinking.... a lot of given names, particularly male names, seem to have other meanings, some not so savoury, unrelated to the origin of the name itself:
John - at least two other meanings
Bill - two
Willy
Bob - two
Rob
Randy
Cliff
Don
Frank - two
Jerry
Mark
Norm
Nick - two
Joe
Tom
Jack
Tony
Pat - two
Grant
Harry
I couldn't come up with many female names like this - Carol is one of the few.
As you can see, I have a little too much time on my hands this afternoon...
Any others? Any ideas why this is?
