Oceans and mud

How long can mud remain undifferentiated? It seems to me that mud standing for any length of time (even a few days)would separate into bottom mud and relatively clear overlying fluid.

Are you saying, Nick, that the channel-scouring debris was deposited onto the wet mud plain, or onto the dried remains of the mud? Would the deposition patterns be similar to that of material dropped from a water flow into an ocean? I would have thought there would be piles of debris at the ends of the flows if they emptied onto a dry plain.
