"If you read Goldin's quote, he set out the problem: the need to connect with the younger generation. Agreed the solution the team came up with was lame, so then,
What would Phil do?"
The problem isn't that NASA needs to connect with the younger generation.
NASA DOES need to be connected with "the public". Any group, doing anything needs to interact. A group which is isolated becomes a cult- to some extent. [to "some extent" Earthlings are a cult:]
If NASA were less socialistic, then it would serve the public, instead of "pretending" it was serving the public [PR]. This "connecting to younger generation" is a "PR solution"- and it's pretty stupid.
Good PR for NASA would be making information easily available. Really good PR works with "the press". The press is an asset, which NASA is mostly wasting [rather than some sort of menace that needs to be "dealt with"].
This effort of "connecting to the younger generation" can be discribed as lame, stupid, and perhaps futile, but kinda sorta in the "right" direction.
