Re: England & Palermo paper on Mars

The Mars Society power point presentation of Efrain, Jill, and Harry's paper has been installed at http://www.eskimo.com/~jill/marssociety_presentation.htm

While it would be nice if flows were caused somehow by water, I'm not personally convinced that is the case. Certainly the ground could not be dark for years after an event from water alone. My current conjecture is that a surface disturbance occurs and it takes years of dust deposition from the atmosphere to "fade" a flow feature.

By definition gullies are NOT "flows/stains/streaks/seeps" . It is the presence of the concurrent erosion features of gullies that precludes them from being "flows". By definition "flows" do not carve out groves on hill sides.

I am very interested in any MOC product id's that have "flows" and gullies near each other.

As for proving that flows/seeps/stains/streaks are water, the paper does not assert that. It does ask the question as to if they could be caused by water. None of us believe that liquid water can exist for very long above ground on Mars.

One thing that has been done is to count all the flows in each image. This has yielded an interesting image, MOC product ID M11 04104, that has an incredible flow density of 38.4 flows per km. This image also seems to show, umm believe it or not, ground fog just above the flows, something which I've never seen in any other MOC high resolution image. The image was taken just after noon local time and the "fog" seems to be rising above the sun lit hill sides. It looks like radiation fog, but this is Mars and that's not possible, I thought.

By the way the highest other flows / km numbers are in the 4 flows/km to 6 flows/km range.
