Upcoming Comet Missions

DEEP IMPACT Launch: January 2004
Sends a self-guided impactor probe that smacks into comet Temple 1 making a footbal field sized crater while the main craft flies by taking pics, sorta like a CNN video of Osama getin' some serious payback.

CONTOUR Launch: July 2002
IR spectrometer to discern comet composition & imager capable of resolving comet Encke down to 100-200 meters.
Continues on to Schwassmann-Wachmann3 in June 2006 and maybe onto comet d'Arrest in 2008. Justin will be shaving by then.

ROSETTA Launch: January 2003 ESA
Comet 46 P/WWirtanen & 2 asteroids, Siwa and Otawara. Uses one Mars & 2 Earth swingbys for gravity assist. Gets within 1 Km and launches a lander. The lander also receives a radio signal through the comet from the orbiter to analyze comet composition. Sad to say, the data sent back will be in French and nobody will be able to understand it.
