Antipodean Leonids

Just back from a fantastic morning Leonid watching. Unfortunately the skies were variably cloud covered, ranging from 3/8 to 7/8+, but saw many dozen spectacular meteors, some glowing red-orange and leaving trails of sparks, others bright bluish-white, crossing up to 40 degrees of sky in 1-2 seconds and ending in a terminal flash. One behind cloud but so bright as to rival the new moon - certainly far brighter than Jupiter

Hard to estimate the total flux but probably short peaks of over 20 per minute of large visible fireballs!

I dragged out my 2 youngest kids at 3 am and they loved it. They asked to come again next year and I had to tell them that was probably the best for 30 years!
