I know what regressive means.

I asked if a democratic society should have a large majority that pays little or no taxes.

What is the upper limit on people on the receiving end? At what point does the producing end fold up? At what point are there too many people in the wagon for the dwindling remainder to pull? In a system where majority rules? Look up the definition of "positive feedback system."

In 1960 there were five workers for every Social Security recipient. That's down to three. In a few more years it's going to be two.

Liberals believe there's no end point to this trend and that we can continue to vastly increase social spending and vastly increase taxes on an ever-smaller percentage of people. The numbers are impossible, but that's never bothered them.
