You would have to solve most, if not all, of the materials problems involved in making a space elevator to solve the Space Power Line problem. It wouldn't be much easier to do than a space elevator.
Microwaves are currently the most practical and safest method of transmitting power from space. Concentrated laser beams might accomplish the same goals, but the potential for accidents and abuse are much greater.
