This area of astronomy is definitely not my field of expertise, but speaking as a layman, this is beginning to look like one of those deals in science history where the experts are off on an intricate, internally-consistent, but completely wrong track.
A few of many examples:
The complex nightmare of spheres required to make the planets move in their observed tracks before the discovery of the sun-centered solar system, gravity and the ellipse.
Phlogiston chemistry
The "ether" mentioned in the article
When the real answers to these puzzles are eventually found, it turns out that they are usually simple, elegant, ordered, and amazing. The history of science is full of these discoveries as well. The Copernican system. The DNA molecule. The first inklings of the periodic table. Atomic theory.
I think that some scientist out there will come up with something completely out of left field that will snap all these contradictory observations together. He may even be alive today.
Cool, ain't it?
Dark matter? Or something else?
