Sure! We'd LOVE fusion rockets! Or gas-core nuclear rockets! Or a matter-antimatter photon rocket.*
The only problem is we have no idea how to build one. We can't even get a decent fusion reaction going on the ground. We could build NERVA rockets or Orions right now if we wanted to, but no one would let us.
There are enough interesting off-the-wall concepts in fusion and fission being looked at that I have some hope that some new technology may come out of left field, but although I'm by nature optimistic, I'm not holding my breath.
I recently scored a hardcover version of the late Max Hunter's "Thrust Into Space," which, although long out of print, is the best all-around reference on current and advanced space propulsion I have ever seen. My old "edition" was a complete photocopy of a library book (for my own personal use only). Watch the used book sites, or check your local library.
This book has a lot of information on fusion, fission, and other advanced rockets.
