Given their penchant for dewlling in the Northern climes, it's likely the Neanderthals were white skinned and our Homo Sapiens Sapiens ancestors migrating out of Africa thru the Mediterranian into Europe were initially dark skinned because of our melanin adaptations in the African sun.
So I pose 2 questions...
What the hell happened to make us (Northern Euros) lose our vertical leap?
And did our ancestors call the Neanderthals "honkies"?
