Space/Science

Possibility for other-worldly life.

I know this is a few days old, but I didn't know how the bacteria survived. I just supposed they went into a hybernation mode.

"The scientists used techniques from high-pressure physics to expose the organisms -- Esherichia coli and Shewanella oneidensis -- to pressures 16,000 times greater than the pressure at sea-level -- an environment similar to that 30 miles under the Earth's crust.

The bacteria promptly switched metabolic systems to do without oxygen and continued to function. (Emphasis added) Scientists used chemical techniques to show that the bacteria were still alive.

Such environments can be found in places in our own solar system and potentially elsewhere in the universe."
