I read the "Falcon and the Snowman" in high school. It was about Christopher Boyce who was a cryptographer for TRW in California. Boyce sold what he considered worthless secrets to the Russians.
According to the book, the capabilities of the KH 11 included the ability to read license plates, read data off of hard drives and monitor up to 50,000 phone calls per minute. (Looking for "keywords" I guess.)
The most striking revelation to me was that the Russians wanted Boyce to go to college (on their ruble) with the end goal of being elected to public office.
They told Boyce that they would be controlling the U.S. within his lifetime.
The book may be fictionalized but Christopher Boyce was caught up here on the Olympic Peninsula.
