Fast, Loose and Out of Control

No, this is not about Lindy. It's regarding "Flesh and Machines: How Robots Will Change Us"
by Rodney Allen Brooks. This MIT researcher is the iconoclast of AI, my kinda guy. He published a paper with that title advocating use oif his type of automomous robots for planetary exploration. Rejecting the institutionalized AI paradigm of attempting to simulate analysis and reason, Brooks builds bots embedded in the physical world. They interact physically on an insectile level reacting to stimuli in a thoughtless manner but effective for 3-D navigation, just like a bug. His tech was used in the Sojourner Mars Pathfinder rover.

Interesting side bits about how JPL mamagement does not like his simple autonomous approach; he says because it's not conducive to big $ programs from NASA. The big $ are needed to subsidize the JPL infrastructure. And we wonder why SkyLab II costs $50 Billion. Brooks book has details of his forthright opinions of many in the field and details about how his subsumption architure works. A fascinating read.
