A series of episodes on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" revolved around a local geek who was capable of building robot women indistinguishable from real ones. He used this ability to create himself a girlfriend, while still living in a basement.
Of course, anyone who could build such a thing from scratch using available materials and the kind of money available to someone living in a basement, could easily become rich enough to have Bill Gates for his shoe shine boy. Somehow this sort of thing never occurs to TV writers.
