A starship with 10,000 people would be needed to maintain genetic viability and environmental survivability, theoretically. However this assumes that each child born has two parents, and that its genome is the combination of no more than two others.

What if gene splicing is used so that each child effectively has more than two parents? Would that allow a smaller crew?
