The sails being discussed today are very flimsy, but nanotech of the future would easily change this. Imagine armor plating no thicker, and no heavier, than a sheet of bond paper. For sail purposes, you can even take this down to a thinner grade, perhaps a molecule or two thick.
If you're going to be working in the future, you have to use futuristic technologies.
