Space/Science » in reply to Comet Hunting 101 for Net Heads

Amateurs are welcome, but this should be done professionally

While amateur interest is all fine and dandy, the search for potential impactors is a deadly serious business.

Even though most of the comets found in SOHO images will simply collide with our Sun, NASA or ESA should be performing this particular comet search with automated image analysis software.
Why? Two reasons. First, our understanding of the total comet population is still very poor at this time, and the SOHO data could help clarify this. Second, comets do impact with planets, and they impact with devastating results.
