Mme Reclus and I were watching that sci-fi war movie about a squad of Marines fighting off an alien invasion of Los Angeles. You know, the one where the BEMs come to steal our water. Not particularly good space opera, but a fairly good action flick, and the SFX, aliens and their tech were cleverly done.
We were commenting on the differences between it and war movies of the Vietnam and WWII era, and I remarked that this might be a bit more realistic than the latter. Our new professional, volunteer armed forces have definitely got their shit together better than the surly massive conscript armies of mid 20th century.
Having just finished watching the whole "I, Claudius" DVDs a few nights ago. I made a comment like, "Behold Caesar's Legions", they're about the only thing in the Empire that seems to be working well nowadays." She replied, "In the Twilight of the Empire, the Legions are the only thing that works the way it should."
