In 2008, government money accounted for about 26 percent of state expenditures, and of that, 57 percent was Medicaid, leaving 15 percent or less for all the things you're talking about. For most of our history, it was a lot less.

Lord knows some states would love to have this be 90 percent. To get loads of freshly-printed Federal bucks to keep them from having to actually have any kind of fiscal responsibility (they can't print money). Doesn't make it a good idea.

As for your second question, it involves the difference between taxed wealth and created wealth. Think about it.

First question: why can't everyone work for the government and get paid with money from taxes?

Second question: at what level of government employment and/or dependency does the system break down?
