Sounds like a case of "penny wise, pound foolish" to me
The Shuttle stayed in orbit two extra days due to bad weather at the Cape. NASA greatly prefers landing at the Cape because they don't have to spend about a million dollars flying it across the country from Edwards. Fine. How much does it cost per day to keep the Shuttle in orbit? I'll bet that when you factor in the additional range support and personnel costs, contractor costs, etc., it's more expensive to keep the Shuttle in orbit for the extra days than it is to fly it across the country, especially when they ended up having to land at Edwards, anyway.
There may be other issues such as the schedule impact due to transit time but then the schedule is impacted by the additional on-orbit time, too.
