I've never done anything remotely like this balloon trip, but have organized things which might have turned dangerous, which had many contingencies, and had quite a few people involved.

I have just gotten obsessed with the planning. After a while, you've done it many times in your mind, confronting every possibility. Then you've planned, trained and equipped. There's a certain confidence in having gone through so many "if - then" scenarios, you just get to where you're tired of thinking about it, and just want to do it.
