Either he's very persistent or just a slow learner. It's hard to tell. I respect him for following through on his dream and envy him for the adventure.

Thank goodness countless scientists and inventors didn't follow that advice or we'd still be in the Dark Ages. According to some sources, Edison suffered thousands of failures before perfecting the light bulb. A lessor man would've quit.
