Re: Backyard Search for Asteroids and Extrasolar Planets

<Here.

Very interesting idea and initiative! It reminds me of a technique using radio antennas to listen to radio stations coming from much further away, when the radiowaves are bounced back by ionized air caused by incoming meteores.

For amateur astronomers, it does depend on several factors, though.
First and foremost: the club MUST have quarters, electricity, an always working computer.
Second: the premises MUST be protected against theft (not being always occupied, the theft insurance premium will become a huge load to the club's budget).

The telescopes don't need a motor, as they are fixed but it's a tricky argument as the use of CCD's will obviously require a computer, thus electricity anyway.

If you do live in such premises, it means you are very much isolated (light pollution) from the rest of the world, from a job, from friends....Maybe you're retired; so, then it might work. But young amateur astronomers live mostly near heavily light polluted cities, need to take a car to go to the field and can mostly only rely on the the car's cigarette lighter from the car for electricity.

And for the idea to work, the weather must be perfect for days and days and weeks in a row.......

Unlikely to work here in Belgium.

But in France, it could.
