CCNet News Items -- "LES ASTEROIDES CONSTITUENT LE PRINCIPAL RISQUE NATUREL PO UR LA TERRE" . . .

"Scientists digging south of Denver say they have uncovered evidence of a lush and vibrant rainforest that emerged surprisingly soon after the asteroid collision that wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. The fossils of more than 100 kinds of towering conifer trees, huge ferns and blooming flowers challenge scientists' long-held assumption that a desolate Earth took about 10 million years to recover from the catastrophe and sprouted only a few dreary plant varieties for a long time."
-- MSNBC, 28 June 2002

"The discussion here seems to address the Earth as an impact target. Impact acceleration will not permit any "gluing together" of material; thus, embedding is a meaningless concept. One imagines a raft on a fast river, embedded in the water. Simple fluid dynamics, right? But the acceleration of the raft by the water will be far lower than the limit set by the molecular restoring forces either in the water or the raft material -- these are the same forces as those determining the speed of sound in water or in the raft. By contrast, acceleration after an escape-speed impact will exceed any possible restoring force (recall, the real-world F= m*a?). The duration of the impact will not permit acceleration by gluing-together or any other means. So, fluids or dust will result--or, no acceleration to escape speed will occur, depending on the details."
