Re: Deinococcus Radiodurans
A dose of 1000 rads is lethal to humans, but D. Radiodurans can survive up to 1.5 million rads of gamma radiation, and if cooled might survive as much as 3 million rads. In November 1999 U.S. Department of Energy-funded researchers at The Institute for Genomic Research completed its genome.
The organism is a strain of pink bacteria that can survive 1.5 million rad of gamma radiation. This dose shreds the bacteria's genome into hundreds of pieces. The organism has the ability to repair this DNA damage completely in a day and go on living.
