Attitude
"I worked with NASA, not for NASA."
You have to wonder how the guy got through the Naval Academy and to O-6 (Captain) with his attitude.
There's a line between contributing, being on a team, and regarding yourself as co-equal or superior. Having read a few accounts of Mercury, Gemini and Apollo, during Apollo Shirra seemed to cross it.
But he didn't until Apollo, and many of the items were petty. I wonder if he got a bit bent because so many of his peers were pretty good, too, and it was clear he wasn't going to the Moon.
Dunno.
