Carpenter
Did you read "Flight" by Chris Kraft? Fascinating book.
He really took after Scott Carpenter. Painted him to be a daydreaming clown chasing the little white specks instead of following the mission plan. Apparently he was very close to running out of consumables and time.
And then after the flight, when Carpenter wanted to do a public "mea culpa", it took his wife to explain why he was going to be a hero and the mission an unqualified success. He couldn't understand why the PR face was necessary.
Don't know how much was true, how much was relevant, but it was all interesting.
