I was trying to be humorous about the whole thing, but that didn't seem to get through. But speaking of plate tectonics, the idea was first let loose in 1912 and it was being rejected right up to the 1960s, take that for what it is worth.
That's one of the problems with science and scientists and their supporters when confronted with something that doesn't jibe with them: They get all serious and flip out and attack the item that doesn't sit with their facts and figures.
It doesn't matter if they are right or wrong, what happens is they attack it in a poor manner that turns off much of the public and makes the guy who came up with the idea in the first place and his supporters feel vindicated that they are right because the so-called establishment is attacking them.
This is just what happened with Velikovksy and his Worlds in Collision ideas. Doesn't matter if he was right or wrong, the scientific community at the time went so all-out to bash him down that his ideas became even more popular as a result.
Maybe someday scientists will learn how to do proper PR and social graces, but I haven't seen it to any major scale yet. And another Carl Sagan has yet to appear.
