Re: Good point.

<<If we could ever get the price per kilo down to afford to ship waste no matter how important, we could afford to do fabulous things besides garbage hauling with that capacity. The nuke waste problem is vastly overstated anyway.

"Right on the money. Not least of the benefits of a launch system that cheap would be the ability to launch and construct large space solar power stations."

Hmm, depends on how much it would cost to store the waste. And that depends on how much time you are storing it. I think 100 years would reasonable and that would probably mean shipping it into space would cost too much. If you take the unreasonable assumption of millions or billions of years then shipping into space "becomes" cost efficent. In other words if you had to have the waste stored somewhere where there is no chance of it affecting life on Earth, that impossible requirement could be answered by shipping it off Earth.

Now, let's twist our brains a bit. What if you could buy storage for 1000+ years? You currently can't do this, and "you" have never been able to do this in the past. The Pharaohs "learned" that even if you build a huge building it's no guarantee of "eternal life".
With the Moon there is a possiblity of getting long term storage. It could provide a "market for time". You could say, buy by 100 year increments and could have conditions associated how something was stored depending on why you wanted something stored. E.g., you could want a graveyard- similar to a Earth graveyard, somewhere you can be "visited" and a marker that spans time. Or you could want a graveyard which is a preservation of your body- say "freeze dried" for a 1000 years. Or maybe you want to store things, holy writings, a video of your dog (spot), or whatever. Or maybe you want to store back up copies- bank records, birth records, or in other words you store the record on Earth, but if something happens you would have a copy on the Moon.
And finally you could have waste, which could be recyled in the future, depending on certain type of conditions (not to be used as dirty bomb by some terrorist).
Now, in order to make this happen, you would need to pass laws which future generations would honor. A step in this direction could achieved by developing a plan for nuclear waste storage on the Moon. Instead of wasting billions of dollars doing the impossible or politically fudging the impossible, you could develop short term plans of storing nuclear waste on Earth with the longer term storage on the Moon.
