Think how much time everyone spends looking at the ground versus how much time they spend looking up into the infinite vistas.
Space scares some folks. It reminds them hos small and inconsequential our world must be on a larger scale.
The bandwidth of most teens and kids is very limited. Little Johnny wants to become a warlock now, not a spaceman.
(I know - a cheap shot at Harry Potter)
I don't know how NASA manages to make space boring - but it does. Somehow, in some manner, NASA makes space appear horribly boring and unexciting.
Is it the NASA employees? I don't think so. Something else is at work here and it's hard to put one's finger on.
It doesn't help that people feel space exploration isn't going anywhere.
Advertising is a crucial tool that is being left out of the equation. Kids and schools need to be hit by a barrage of space promotion.
If there were $$$ to be made in space (Think Barks "Loony Lunar Gold Rush") everyone would be building their own rockets and heading into space.
If there were FAME or LAURELS or medals presented to our space crews today - more would also join. Each new accomplishment deserves a ceremony and recognition - to help maintain public interest and capture children's imagination.
Space is so underplayed it is almost like astronauts are sanitation workers.
This needs to change.
My ten cents,

Space is really beyond most folks bandwidth...
