I think the biggest favor we could do for this planet would be to put large numbers of people elsewhere. To say the oceans aren't yet occupied is to ignore the fact that we share this planet with countless other species, many of whom do call the ocean home and would likely be placed at serious risk if humanity decided to "occupy" the seas.
Unfortunately, most people place about the same value on the earth that they do on each other, which is to say, very little.
(By the way Raoul, I know you were basically playing "Devil's advocate.")
