How can NASA give away money in sufficient quantities to do what it can't seem to do on any given budget?
(Which is get man back into space)
Token prizes are for crackerjack boxes.
To master our solar system and develop a substantial solar probe fleet and a fleet of manned exploration craft will require hundreds of billions of dollars - probably a trillion dollars.
It is going to require a breakthrough in field propulsion systems that can offset nearly any weight. Then craft can be built the size of aircraft carriers and enter orbit with no more fuss than a helium balloon lifting into the air.
These large craft will shield the occupants from intense radiation and create earthlike domiciles in the heart of the craft. They can travel at speeds approaching light speed for fast solar system exploration and indepth mapping/research.
The research IS still going on in this type of technological breakthrough - but it is extremely expensive and the going is painfully slow.
NASA wont be the first to have this technology though - it is almost inevitable that it will be developed and perfected by independently contracted, classified military researchers. In fact it's possible they have already experienced limited success in manipulating fields for propulsion.
When it is perfected - watch out! All of the 20th century's progress will appear like a babies first step.
