I recently saw an analysis that a war would cost US$1.5 Billion PER DAY.
Bruce Moomaw recently discussed sample return architectures for Mars and noted that the cost was ~$1.5 Billion.
So, for each day of a nominal 30-day campaign, we could instead launch a major Mars mission.
Outer planets missions are more expensive, but still room for a few of them instead of blasting downtown Bagdhad
