NASA's reference mission is based on Zubrin's work not Lowther's yours or mine. The fact that they did not copy it whole hog shows there is plenty of room for disagreement on details, although the prime differences are caused by different assessments of acceptable risk IMO.
I don't think much of Tumlinson either.
