Misses The Point Entirely

I don't know of many Mars Supporters that would oppose testing Mars mission technology by going to the Moon. I'm not sure even Zubrin opposes the idea. The point is setting the goal for Mars. It has been mentioned many times by Mars supporters that this will enable a return to the Moon as well. The reason for firmly commiting to a Martian goal is public support and getting a foothold where it is most sustainable.

Large scale disagreement only arises when return to the Moon supporters try and claim some large scale return to the Moon is a prerequisite for going to Mars or even considering the idea.

Commercial possibilities are obviously more likely for the Moon near term and anyone who opposes exploring those possibilities is not looking at the big picture. Unfortunately the prospects for private exploration of the Moon still don't look good. My best wishes go out to those exploring the possibility, but I consider it charity for a good cause rather than investment at this point in time.

Mark
