He finally retired a few years ago. Anyway, he didn't run in the unlimited class but in some sort of pro-stock class. Some years, he was ranked as high as 2nd in the nation in his class for a time. Mechanical troubles kept him from finishing a season ranked that high.
Anyway, Steve used to have the fastest 2-stroke motorcycle in America. He could go from 1-150 MPH in a quarter mile. After he retired tha bike (he built it himself, he's a master machinist & welder), he raced bikes owned by others. On some some those, he'd top well over 160 MPH in a quarter. Freaking nuts, IMO, but I bet it was a rush.
Those unlimited class rails can hit something like 300 MPH in a quarter, or so I've heard. At least they're somewhat enclosed. Still, they're enclosed with an engine that's quite likely to explode just behind them. Funny cars are even worse - the engine/timebomb is inside the body shell with them. Insane.

My brother Steve used to drag race motorcycles professionally
