"Saturn by 1970"

<Oh yeah. Back in the days when nothing was beyond the reach of a strong left arm.

I sometimes look around America and make lists of the achievements--bridges, dams, buildings, canals, highways, airports, etc.--that, if we wanted to build them today, would not be permitted. I think about this every time I cross the Golden Gate Bridge: this creation would no longer be tolerated by the environmentalists if we wanted to build it today.

Note that the U.S. could withdraw from the Test Ban Treaty at three month's notice.

We could do this.

Toss out the complex Mars missions, the multi-billion dollar advance propulsion systems. Build one of these mothers in a shipyard, tow it out to the middle of the ocean, and let it go. The radiation would be minimal.

It would take much larger balls than are currently available in this country, but we could do this.

Maybe somebody else will.

As the article says: what's Chinese for "Orion?"
