I agree with delbert. After all, it's mostly just a thin aluminum shell.

I've seen a tape of it re-entering over the Indian Ocean and it looked as though disintrigration is fairly complete.

Someone please confirm this if you can. Doesn't the shuttle do a burn just before ET-sep to ensure deorbit of the tank?
