This is, in fact, on the agenda. For example, at the recent AGU a study of dust devil tracks concluded that the aggregate effect of many dust devils, which each laid down thin dark streaks, was to contribute to the observed springtime wave of darkening.
The colour of the dark dust DOES have a faint greenish tinge, especially compared to the orange/tan of the rest of Mars.
