It would work, and I remember seeing very old illustrations of men working on the moon in space suits with just such umbrellas mounted on the suits. I think that the problem would have been one of deployment and operations, and nobody wanted to add another mechanical system and its weight (however small) when other workarounds were available.
The gold foil was used to good effect on the LM, though, even if not in umbrella form.
