<The ME 262 was a WWII Luftwaffe fighter that was capable of dives that appraoched the speed of sound.

I've heard some sources claim that the P-47 was capable of mach 1 in a dive. This figure this must have been misconstrued from a bad joke about what heavy son-of-a-B*t*h it was.
