Those at the top with the knowledge, credentials and leadership/power to lead were Von Braun and JFK.... a good combination sharing the leadership at the same time. JFK had the political power and gave the go-ahead to pursue the voyage/s towards space.... he also knew that it could be done... humans were ready to take on the challenges. Von Braun, knew that we could take on the challenges as well and had the knowledge and credentials to back it up. Von Braun knew that he wasn't alone, his peers felt the same way. With these two major figures in the limelight, the press had to follow.
It really isn't difficult these days to get information and knowledge. Broadcasting the news 'live' on television and the internet has brought a wealth of knowledge. There really isn't any excuse anymore. However, it starts with people.... leaders as Von Braun and JKF to lead the way and good teachers to teach the basics.
