Some folks are out to fleece people, Sam. Others just like the attention the Internet can provide.
Unsubstantiated claims about planets and asteroids are easy to make and even quasi-reputable scientists can get caught up in the quick thrill and press attention given to doomsday "asteroids."
If there is really a threat - we all here would be posting about it nearly 24/7 and brainstorming potential solutions on how to divert or destroy it.
Life is more exciting for some under the fear of doom. There's too many real dilemma's, projects and concerns to deal with - and no time for make-believe ones.
Some folks create these sites and will travel to every BBS around town and post their links hoping for bites. However, the response most people will give is akin to what one feels when one has received spam mail.
Many folks have died in the past due to ignorance of the heavens and riots would occur during meteor showers and in even older civilizations such activity would spur sacrifices and pagan ceremonies to fanciful gods.
Don't be a modern day pagan - use common sense and don't be fooled into spamming BBS' with other folks illusions.
There are a host of sites out there that are reputable sources of space news and where one can keep up to date on the space scene. Habitable Zone here will almost always have any news posted on the board as well. Just put this site to your favorites and if there is a real asteroid heading our way - look for plenty of posts by E.P. Grondine, Dr. Impact and a whole host of others who will chime in with their views.
Hope this helps, welcome to HZ.
