Power of the psyche? Even if we assume that to be possible, how can we expect their psyches to be able to communicate with ours? Presumably, we would be biologically very different, so our brains, having evolved independently, would not be compatible for telepathy, even if such a thing existed. You can't use a walky talky to talk to a cell phone.
Due to language or brain differences, it might be impossible to communicate with aliens at all, even techy ones, other than in the most simplistic way, like "Go away" or "Trade my plutonium for your carbon-fiber/titanium laminate?"
I once thought of a great idea for an SF short story. A human spaceship encounters an alien one, an apparently friendly species, and they temporarily exchange crewmen. The alien appears to be desperately trying to communicate something that seems to have something to do with violence, although he makes no direct threatening gesture or hostile action, in fact, he clearly makes himself vulnerable to the humans.
But when the the humans receive their hostage back, the aliens send him over in a sack, they have dissected him. In their culture, you demonstrate peaceful intent and friendliness to a stranger by sacrificing one of your own for study. And they expect the same.
